Like a Child

http://bible.com/116/mat.11.25.nlt
At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.

Observation
It is childlike faith that follows Christ with abandon, stepping out in faith and doing things to follow the Lord that seem foolish to the world around us.

A proud and arrogant person hears the Word of God and thinks himself wiser, twisting it and turning it or denying altogether that it applies to their lives – having no fear of God at all.

A childlike faith looks to the Word of God a and the Holy Spirit as their teacher, not relying upon their own understanding,  but being humbled daily by examining their lives closely and identifying those things that need to be cut out and abandoned so they might live a life that more perfectly reflects Christ’s love. It is understanding that His way is the best way for our lives because His life of obedience and love validated and confirmed His title as Messiah just as our lives of obedience and confirm His presence living in us and through us.

And even as we continue to grow,  we are humbled by our not yet fully reflecting His perfection in our walk. It is in our weakness that we are reminded that we are the children and He is the teacher. In our stumbles and as we search deeper into the depths of our hearts with this two edged sword of the Word of God performing surgery upon the cancer of sin that must be cut out, we find ourselves on our knees before Him at the foot of the cross, boo claiming royal titles of kings and rulers and crown bearers – but humbly claiming our title as the very children of God that He professes as His when He says,  “Suffer not the little children to come into me.”

You see,  He tells the world and all of creation,  He, the Christ,  the Word of God,  through whom the heavens and earth were created,  He who has been here since the beginning and who will be here evermore commands – Yes, He commands His creation to not get in the way of His little children as they come to rest at His feet and learn from their teacher.

And He warns the world,  those proud and arrogant enemies of truth,  that stand in opposition and that seek to distract and destroy those that are His –  those that think themselves wise in their own minds – He warns them of their destruction – He promises them that they will be laid low.

So we must examine our hearts and recognize those areas of pride and vanity in our lives that need to be cut out that are a trap and snare to ourselves and are a stumbling block to others. We are to be humble and obedient children of God,  not proud and rebellious children of evil and self importance.

Call to Action
Is God truly first in our life today, friends? Does our spiritual stance, our position before God, our visible actions in front of others prove us humble and obedient to the Word of God proving the fear of God that is His wisdom?

Walking upright and obedient to the Word of God, while loving and serving and forgiving even those who might seem “far from God” is the stance that recognizes our own position before God – not as someone kingly and close to the perfection of Christ ourselves, but as one “far from God” ourselves if we were to be measured and judged by our life actions alone without the redeeming sacrifice of Christ and the gift of His grace. Because even a single sin, even a lustful thought, even a hateful thought,  anything that falls short of the glory of God proves that we are not yet standing in his presence, that we are still in the flesh and not yet in our fully glorified spiritual being.

Yes, we are just children. We are growing from the seed planted and watered and growing by the streams of living waters. We might even be little trees bearing fruit in our branches, but we are just children, learning and growing at the deer of our Father. We are not great,  but He is. If there is anything great in our lives, it is Him – as we decrease and He increases. But all of that which is good and honorable, He gets the glory and praise and honor. It is His alone.

Humble child of God, arise and walk upright and obedient to the Word of God. Be healed and renewed. Find strength in the Lord your God.

Enemies of truth – arrogance,  pride,  vanity and all who would stand in the way of the Lord’s work – make way for your own destruction. Your time draws near, my Lord Jesus Christ approaches and will come quickly like a thief in the night. Repent while there is still time. Hit your knees and surrender willingly to the one who loves you and is willing to forgive you and free you from your captivity,  or who is faithful and true to send you into everlasting separation from God.

Believe,  take up your cross and follow Him. Find yourself sitting at the feet of the Good Shepherd,  child of God.

What do workers do?

http://bible.com/116/mat.9.37-38.nlt
He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few.  So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.”

What do workers do?  They work and they get paid. But those who don’t work get fired because they are useless. Are we working, not working but hoping to not get fired, or satisfied with a free check that we aren’t willing to work for?

Observation
There are so few workers for Christ in this world. There are a lot of people who want to claim Christ for what they think He can give them, wanting to be master over a genie they can pay to for blessings – trying to make God the worker and themselves the master. There are a lot of people working hard to plan a career path and to build up their financial wealth and status so they might try to find comfort and security in their wealth, but how many would say they put similar effort into planning how they might work for the Lord and spread the gospel to the ends of the earth?

Forgiveness comes with healing, which leads to walking, which carries us home

http://bible.com/116/mat.9.5-6.nlt
Is it easier to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up and walk’?  So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”

Life Application
It’s easy to tell someone his sins are forgiven; it’s a lot more difficult to reverse a case of paralysis! Jesus backed up his words by healing the man’s legs. Jesus’ action showed that his words were true; he had the power to forgive as well as to heal. Talk is cheap, but our words lack meaning if our actions do not back them up. We can say we love God or others, but if we are not taking practical steps to demonstrate that love, our words are empty and meaningless. How well do your actions back up what you say?

Observation
We each have many needs. And the Lord is aware of them all. Above all,  we need to be born again – not just forgiven,  but healed so that we can stand upright and walk a righteous life serving God.

If we are just accepting forgiveness and not changed and healed and living out a repentant life,  where is the miracle,  where is the example set forth so that others might see the fruitful change in our lives and draw near to Christ?

You see,  beloved,  we are each not just forgiven, but we are a miracle. We each have a testimony of being snatched from the darkness and delivered into the light. If we don’t yet have that c testimony, if we haven’t yet received that miracle,  He promises that if we seek Him,  if we continue to knock,  He will answer.

Hope
We find Hope in the promise that He will answer,  that He will hear our call, as we surrender our lives to Him – that He is faithful and true to honor His promise of accepting those who believe as His adopted children.

Faith
And yes, we will be tested. If we are seeking to follow in the footsteps of Christ,  if we are hungry to learn more each day from our teacher and to walk in the Spirit,  we will encounter trials and tribulations and suffering – and it is in these that the miracle of what we claim with our words is proven in our changed actions. A verbal claim of forgiveness is backed up,  is proven, by the visible proof of healing and repentance. And this is our life lived as a testimony to others that He is Faithful and True.

Love
And as we grow in our faithful walk,  as He is proven alive in our lives as we trust Him and cling to Him through the challenges,  we find that even those challenges were for our good,  as He uses them to bless us with the fruit of the Spirit that comes from standing firm during the trials. Love springs forth. Not judgement,  not hatred towards others,  not condemnation,  not fits of anger towards others – but love. If we are trees growing by the stream of living waters, we bear fruit to nourish others, even the leaves from our branches are used to provide healing for others.

We are to be peacemakers, humble in spirit, like Christ, knowing that we are a total priesthood because of His promises, but as He demonstrated in His example – we should be satisfied midst in laying down our crown at His feet, and serving others with this gospel message,  and praying,  “Father forgive them,  they know not what they do.”

Call to Action
It is easy to claim forgiveness and to not live out the example, but if that is the case,  can we be sure that we have laid our hands on the only treasure that really matters? Are we sure that we have not forfeited our soul to gain the world, beloved?

Take heart. Rest in Him. Prove yourself today in accepting His forgiveness, in claiming your miracle, in living out a repentant life remembering the grace that has been extended to you, and may your grattitude and ginger for the Lord spill out onto the lives of all around you in love,  in service unto others.

Forgive others. And receive forgiveness.

Be healed and walk upright so that others might find healing for themselves.

Know that your home is in heaven and that you are just a traveler in this land, so that His Love,  His Kingdom is come in your life today,  as a shining light on a hill,  as a servant’s hands washing the feet of others, as Christ alive in you today,  beloved.

Don’t just claim Christ, be the body of Christ today – child of God, vessel of the Holy Spirit.

Help us

http://bible.com/116/mat.7.21.nlt
Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter.

Lord, help us to be doers of your will,  not just hearers,  not just talkers,  not just feelers, not just sinners with no repentance in our hearts.

Today’s work doesn’t leave time for tomorrow’s worry

http://bible.com/116/mat.6.34.nlt
So don’t worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will bring its own worries.
Today’s trouble is enough for today.

Life Application
Planning for tomorrow is time well spent; worrying about tomorrow is time wasted. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference. Careful planning is thinking ahead about goals, steps, and schedules, and trusting in God’s guidance. When done well, planning can help alleviate worry. Worriers, by contrast, are consumed by fear and find it difficult to trust God. They let their plans interfere with their relationship with God. Don’t let worries about tomorrow affect your relationship with God today.

Hope
Do we realize that we can lift our worries to the Lord? Do we realize that we have hope in His promises? Do we believe that He loves us and is always with us? Who can help us if not the Lord?

Hidden Treasure

http://bible.com/116/mat.6.21.nlt
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

Observation
Our minds and our emotions can work to fool us about the state of our heart.

Our minds can tell us, I’m attending church each week and hearing the Word of God, I’m in fellowship weekly in a Bible Study group, I’m reading the scriptures daily in my morning devotionals, and I’m thinking about the lessons being taught and appreciating them. But if we are not applying these lessons in our lives,  if we do not see Christ alive in our lives,  surrendering to Him and serving others – are we just practicing Gnosticism and doing mental gymnastics to avoid truly accepting Jesus Christ as the Lord and authority over our lives?

And having an emotional response to the gospel can have a similar misleading impression of the true state of our hearts. If we continue in the same sin and open rebellion over and over, only finding ourselves convicted and emotional when confessing our sins to the Lord, seeking forgiveness but not seeking His will in our lives – are we simply remorseful but not repentant and obedient to God?

Repentance

http://bible.com/116/pro.12.1-3.nlt
To learn, you must love discipline;
it is stupid to hate correction.
The Lord approves of those who are good,
but he condemns those who plan wickedness.
Wickedness never brings stability,
but the godly have deep roots.

Observation
A pastor yesterday posed the question to Facebook,  “What is repentance?”

I saw all kinds of answers that focused on either thinking a certain way in your head or feeling a certain way in your emotions, but I didn’t see a single response that said,  “Go and sin no more.” In fact, I saw a lot of discussion about things that take no cost,  no sacrifice,  no real commitment to living a Christian life of obedience.
