Teacher? Or Messenger?

http://bible.com/116/eph.4.2-6.nlt
Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.

It seems like it would be easier to meditate on the Word of God if we disappeared into a quiet corner and stayed there,  like a monk for the rest of our lives – but being “high minded” or being “intellectual” about the theology of Christ is not our goal. Our goal is to live a life of love and service unto one another.

And if everyone was perfect and had no faults,  this would be an easy task and calling, but unfortunately, we are not surrounded by perfect people like Christ while we are still in this world. We are called to accept and love other Christians in spite of their faults, to find unity and to grow together in Christ.

It is sad to look at divisions and dissention within the world that calls buildings and denominations the church. Do we not know that the Lord does not dwell in temples made by the hands of men,  but that He dwells in the bodies of the believers? Do we not know that those who follow their sinful nature of division and dissention will not inherit the Kingdom of God?

Jesus didn’t flee from sharing truth, His words were bold as a lion

And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”  After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”  Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
John 6:65-70 ESV

Many are called,  but few are chosen.

There are those who hear the call and fall away when it puts their comfort at risk.

These twelve,  these true students of Jesus Christ,  the Word of God, God come in the flesh, eleven of them got it. They realized they had nowhere to turn but to God,  because they understood that this life is nothing in comparison to eternity. And it changed their lives completely, and their lives rocked the world around them.

Jesus wasn’t a numbers guy. He wasn’t looking for visible outcomes,  because He knew the difference between false “religious converts” and true chosen children of God. If He was just about altar calls and gathering reliable tithes into the storehouse,  He surely wouldn’t have so often delivered messages like –

There can be only one

All roads don’t lead to heaven.

John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Sounds quite clear. Even my 4 year old daughter can understand that at the name of Jesus every head will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord of Lords, and King of Kings.

Puddles of tears

How often do our prayers consist of a practiced ritual instead of a genuine pouring out of ourselves to God?

How often do we actually see the pain and struggles of others and mourn for them, covering our floor or our pillow with tears about others and not just ourselves?

I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears.

Time to change clothes

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all of these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians 3:5, 8-8, 12-17 ESV
http://bible.com/59/col.3.5-17.ESV

“And above all of these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Our natural,  sinful nature is to love ourselves – but this puts us in a position contrary to the will of God and usually puts us in a position in opposition to others as we battle to claim pleasures and possessions for ourselves.

But love binds us together.

We need more love. Actual love.

Not a feeling alone that doesn’t result in sacrificing for others. That isn’t love at all but is just lust. We need real love love like Christ,  who knew no enemy of flesh and blood, but just saw hurt and lost people under the influence of sin.

He even prayed publicly for those torturing and killing Him to be forgiven. Because He didn’t see a sinner – He saw a Child of God caught in the trap of sin. He saw a precious and valuable life that was infected and influenced by sin and death.

How much would it change our world to have the spiritual eyes of Jesus Christ? To see what is happening in the people around us as either the evidence of Christ alive and shining through them,  or to see the visible work of that disease that need to be healed. How much would it change or world if we offered them the healing that is needed in their lives by loving them and sharing Christ with them?

How often we set our eyes upon the physical world and are blind to the movements of those things spiritual and eternal. How often we see enemies instead of brothers and sisters who are hurting and need salvation and deliverance from the ties that bind them to death. How often can we participate in bringing harmony by sharing love,  giving them an opportunity to be bound instead to Christ in love.

As I put on these things in my life. As I set my eyes upon the higher things,  those things imperishable and eternal, let the world see less of me and more of Christ. Let them see past me and set their eyes upon Christ. Let them be bound to love,  and let us find the unity and harmony that truly changes the world,  one surrender at a time.

Holy, holy, holy,
Wonderful and mighty,
Faithful and True.

Hallelujah,
The Lamb is worthy to open the scroll,
And to reconcile this world to God’s will.

We lift our voices in praise
We sing a new song of life
Of a sacrifice paid in blood
That washed us white as snow.

We put on our new garments
Of Christ who lives in us
As we serve as a vessel of His Holy Spirit
Sitting as a humble and eager student at His feet
And sitting as a servant washing the feet of our brothers and sisters.

And the whole world will know Him,
Either His love or His just wrath,
When every head bows and every knee bends at the name of the Lord.

Let the yielding come now,
Oh, Lord,
While there is time for salvation.
Have mercy on your people,
Lead us into righteousness,
Not into death,
For your glory and honor.

Demonstrate your love
to the ends of the earth
that they might know you
And claim you as their own.

We are a stiff necked people,
Oh, Lord.
Discipline us sufficiently to correct our paths,
Let us be upon the narrow path that demonstrates our love and faith in you,  Lord.

Have mercy upon your servants,
Oh, Lord,
For our enemies are great in number
And they fire their attacks at us daily.

Equip us with your armor,
Oh, Lord,
Determine our steps,
Oh, Lord,
Lead us not into temptation or evil,
So that your will is done in earth,
In our lives as the body of Christ alive and operating today.

Teach us to love like you,
Oh, Lord.
Guide us to our final destination in your presence as a faithful servant and a living child of the most high.

Praise the Lord,
Your name is worthy of praise,
Oh,  Lord.

Hear our praise daily,
May we never cease singing of your glory,
May we sit in the presence of the Lord,
Never to leave the Holy of Holies,
But to walk with you,
to talk with you,
Too share in life with you,

Claim us and hold us close to you,
Oh, Lord,
We long for your breath,
We long for your touch,
We long for your face.

Cast away this world from our thoughts,
And set them upon you, Lord.
Oh,  that we might be blessed
with the answered prayer
of a life lived as a sacrifice
to your honor and glory,
Oh, Lord.

Hear us crying out in the darkness,
Hear is singing your praises,
We love you as we best know how,
Even though it falls so short of the love you have shown us.
Teach us to love.

We are yours.

We pray in the name of Jesus Christ as your Word teaches us,
And we have faith that our prayer is answered, Father.

Thank you,
Father.

Fire is for burning what is cut away and cast off

Acts 19:19 ESV
And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver.

These followers of Christ did not ask themselves, but shouldn’t we sell them and use the money to feed the poor. No, because they saw the danger in those things that are demonic and are not glorifying the Lord. They not only wanted nothing to do with it themselves any longer, but they didn’t want it to be an influence in the lives of anyone they might sell them to. Why would we want to contribute to the negative influence of others and receive money for doing it. Isn’t that like being a hired hand for the enemy? Getting paid to influence someone else towards the pit.

And they didn’t hang onto it saying, “but I’ll be able to use it as common ground with those still involved in it, so that I can better witness to them”. They weren’t still making excuses for clinging to their old lives because they knew that it was a snake, that its bite was dangerous and poisonous.

Glory to Glory, Step by Step

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
http://bible.com/59/2co.3.18.ESV

The King James version says “with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord”. In this chapter about God’s great new covenant, where Paul has just finished defending his ministry,  he is telling those in Corinth what it is to be unveiled. You see, just like today, many were blind without understanding.

It isn’t easy, but it is so good.

The great are humble.

So what is humility?

http://bible.com/116/mat.18.1-4.nlt
About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Don’t let the food get in the way

My wife and I had a date night last night. It’s the first time that we have been to our favorite restaurant in almost 11 months. Needless to say, we were both excited. And we talked afterwards about how much more we appreciate it now that we aren’t going all the time.

But last night, I realized that I had missed out on a great opportunity for it to be more than a trip to a restaurant together. It was partially a missed opportunity for me to really focus on being kind and honoring to my wife. I didn’t dishonor her,  and we had a great time together, but our focus was on the meal. To be honest with you, the “time together” was probably secondary to the “great food” for both of us.

How often does that happen and we don’t even realize it until something wakes us up?  How often do we let the most important things fall out of their proper order and priority in our lives?

Remaining Underground

Before fruit is ever visible, a seed had to be planted, and it needs nutrients, water and the Son to grow. And the roots bust forth from the seed,  and they spend their life tearing through the soil,  breaking it apart and devouring the decomposing soil. The death and decay in the soil mixes with water to feed the plant through its roots below the surface,  so that the tree can grow above the surface.

And isn’t it the same with spiritual growth? We start out as decaying flesh. Physical bodies of chemical elements – dust that will return to dust. And a seed is planted – of gospel truth, of awareness of God, of realization of something greater than self. And we either desire to remain dead and decaying and playing in the mud with the worms, or we draw near to the life giving water and light of the Lord.
