Hot or Cold

May the Word of God be like a refining fire burning away the dross and like a healing flame coterizing our wounds – not as something far away to be wondered at over how it is working in the life of another, but close, near, dear to us, and active in our lives.
May the Living Waters be like a bubbling hot spring that cleanses and disinfects and kills bacteria and disease or as a cold stream down from the mountaintop that refreshes and renews – not something still, dead, stagnant, putrid and lukewarm of no real use at all.

“I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other!  But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!  You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.  So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.  I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

Revelation 3:15‭-‬19 NLT

Are we more comfortable laying around in the complacency of the lukewarm waters, away from the fires that refine and heal?

Do we let the trials of this life choke out any evidence of godliness that we hoped to claim and mimic under our own strength — instead of presenting ourselves humble, destitute, and fully surrendered to Christ, following Him gratefully and fearfully and faithfully into the fiery trials and see Him prove Himself faithful and true?

So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]. For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to will and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure. Do everything without murmuring or questioning [the providence of God], so that you may prove yourselves to be blameless and guileless, innocent and uncontaminated, children of God without blemish in the midst of a [morally] crooked and [spiritually] perverted generation, among whom you are seen as bright lights [beacons shining out clearly] in the world [of darkness], holding out and offering to everyone the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to rejoice greatly because I did not run [my race] in vain nor labor without result.

PHILIPPIANS 2:12‭-‬16 AMP

What are we doing?

It doesn’t matter what the world thinks we are — it’s what God knows we are. We can fool each other, and many of us can even deceive ourselves.

History tells us that some have even gone as far as throwing the silver back like Judas, or weeping like Esau, but…
When it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table with the Twelve. While they were eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.” Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, “Am I the one, Lord?” He replied, “One of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me.  For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!” – Matthew 26:20‭-‬24 NLT
Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears. – Hebrews 12:14‭-‬17 NLT
Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins. There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies. For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us. For we know the one who said, “I will take revenge. I will pay them back.” He also said, “The Lord will judge his own people. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ. Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering. Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others who were suffering the same things. You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever. So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. “For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay. And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.” But we are not like those who turn away from God to their own destruction. We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved. – Hebrews 10:26‭-‬39 NLT
So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. – James 1:21‭-‬25 NLT
So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. For if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, you have been cut off from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace. But we who live by the Spirit eagerly wait to receive by faith the righteousness God has promised to us. You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth? It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom. For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another. So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another. – Galatians 5:1‭, ‬4‭-‬5‭, ‬7‭-‬8‭, ‬13‭-‬17‭, ‬19‭-‬26 NLT

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless? Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.  So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. – James 2:14‭-‬24 NLT

Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.  But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep.  My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me,  for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.  The Father and I are one.” Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?” They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.” Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’  And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’  why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.  Don’t believe me unless I carry out my Father’s work.  But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.” – John 10:25‭-‬38 NLT
You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.  You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.  This is my command: Love each other. “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.  The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you.  Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.  They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me.  They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. – John 15:14‭-‬22 NLT
“No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen by all who enter the house.  For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.” – Luke 8:16‭-‬18 NLT

From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. ” – Matthew 4:17 NLT

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.  God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.  And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.  All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed.  But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. ” – John 3:16‭-‬21 NLT

What are WE doing, friends?

WE are coming into the light.

Divided Loyalties, or Firm Foundation?

But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Luke 11:28 NKJV

For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who  are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Each is serving a certain master. Either the master of heavenly and eternal blessings – or the prince of this world and all of the carnal things that the world has to offer.

“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 6:24 NKJV

I have to ask myself – When I look at those two lists, which list do I long for and desire? Which list do I hate?

Yes, a child still not mature in the faith, one still suckling at the milk may look and wonder – Or are you double minded and believe that it is possible to have divided loyalties, denying the Word of God?

Prosperity that leads to humility

Now in my prosperity I said, “I shall never be moved.” Lord , by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong; You hid Your face, and I was troubled. I cried out to You, O Lord ; And to the Lord I made supplication: “What profit is  there in my blood, When I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your truth? Hear, O Lord , and have mercy on me; Lord , be my helper!” You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, To the end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

Psalms 30:6-12 NKJV

http://bible.com/114/psa.30.6-12.NKJV

David says that “in his prosperity” he said that he would not be moved. He doesn’t say that it was his faith in God – it was the security that he found in his wealth that have him confidence. This is a problem.

The warnings of Revelation chapter 18 lay out the dangers of Babylon – of relying on riches and wealth and the world’s economic system as the source of our comfort and security as opposed to relying upon God. And Matthew 6:24 and Luke 16:13 tell us that we cannot serve two masters. Proverbs in the Old Testament and Philippians in the New Testament both warn of the dangers of prosperity.

Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches— Feed me with the food allotted to me; Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the Lord ?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.

Proverbs 30:8-9 NKJV

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Philippians 4:11-13 ESV

http://bible.com/59/php.4.11-13.ESV

Even though it is God’s favor that led to the prosperity,  we can see that it can be an issue for those who lose sight of relying upon God for our strength. Prosperity can be very dangerous if it turns our reliance and security to anything other than God.

Mark 8:36 and Matthew 16:26 both give sound warnings about gaining the world only to lose our soul. Matthew 6:19-21 tell us of the treasures that we should be laying up for ourselves.

But David had let an idol get in between himself and God, and it was the wealth and prosperity that he had amassed as a result of the favor and blessing that God had poured out upon David’s life. You see,  money isn’t the blessing. Money and things aren’t the blessings at all. The blessings are gifts and abilities and strengths that the Lord gives us that we can use in our lives. And sometimes money and prosperity and wealth can be the result of our holding back too much of the proceeds of those gifts for ourselves.

In David’s case,  he realized this. He was convicted that the Lord has hidden his face from Him – which was his perspective and limited understanding,  but not the reality – God had not turned away, He had turned away.He had turned from God’s best and perfect purpose for him to use his gifts for the common good of the community.

And this troubled David,  and he made supplication for it by offering to build the Lord a house, a temple (1 Chronicles 17,  2 Samuel 7, 1 Chronicles 28). And even though the Lord said no, that David could not build Him a temple – the Lord accepted David’s repentance,  His change of heart to realize that he needed to turn back to his reliance solely upon the Lord as his source of comfort and security – not any wealth or prosperity.

David’s eyes had been opened to understand wealth not as a blessing,  but as a responsibility.

The Gospel of Mark – Chapter 1

John the Baptist Prepares the Way
This is the Good News about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written:
“Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
and he will prepare your way.
He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the lord’s coming!
Clear the road for him!’
This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
Q: Who is this section of scripture talking about?
A: John the Baptist
Q: Where was John the Baptist?
A: Out in the wilderness
Q: What was he doing there?
A: Preaching and Baptizing
Q: What did the people need to do to be baptized?
A: Repent of their sins.
Q: What does “repented of their sins mean”?
A: That they have turned back to God, and confessed they are sorry for their sins, and decided to change their way and walk in obedience instead of disobedience.
Q: Who did John tell the people was coming?
A: Jesus, the Messiah.
Q: John baptized with water, but he said that Jesus would baptize with what?
A: The Holy Spirit (like a dove).
Q: And what is the Holy Spirit?
A: The Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit of God come to live in us and to guide us, teach us, and lead us in the way.
The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus
One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
Later on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God’s Good News. “The time promised by God has come at last!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!”
Q: Where did John baptize Jesus?
A: In the Jordan River.
Q: What happened right as Jesus was baptized?
A: The sky opened split apart
Q: What came down from the sky after it was parted?
A: The Holy Spirit descended
Q: Why was John arrested?
A: He was speaking against sin
Q: What did the voice from heaven say?
A: God acknowledged Jesus Christ as His son and that He was pleased with Him.
Q: What did Jesus then go and preach, telling the people to do?
A: Repent of their sins and believe.
Q: What does God call us when we repent of our sins and confess Him as our Lord and Savior?
A: He calls us His children.

Hitting Toes and Cutting Deep

Complaining about our wants,

while we overlook others’ needs,

is not “patiently waiting on God’s provision”.

#HitMyToesFirst

Last night I posted this privately instead of publicly because I needed to think about it closely. I then commented on it with my thoughts about it before heading off to sleep:

And I’m not just talking about stuff.

If my wanting or expecting someone to be a different way so that they are easier for me to deal with — is greater than my seeing their need for someone to love, encourage, and help them — where does that leave me?

Lord, teach us to walk in your way. Teach us to see things from that new, right perspective of love that has no agenda and is not self serving.

Then I woke up to our morning routine as a family.

Proverbs 11:17 was Mia’s morning devotional and ours was Phillipines 4:6-7,11-13 this morning. Pretty cool when you wake up to confirmation to what you were contemplating and chewing on before going to sleep.

When you’re kind to others, you help yourself; when you’re cruel to others, you hurt yourself.

Proverbs 11:17 MSG

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Philippians 4:6‭-‬7‭, ‬11‭-‬13 NLT

And I’m reminded that whether or not we receive the truth and allow it to work it’s way down into our hearts and be planted, applied, and lived out in our lives should serve as a testimony as to the true state of our faith, of our relationship with Christy who is meant to live in us and through us, child of God. (Mark 4) We should examine ourselves and fall broken and repentant in the hands of the potter to be renewed in our minds, changed in our hearts, touched by the hands of His powerful grace and His Holy Spirit that is alive in the heart of a believer. This Word of God is sharp and should cut deep and do its work firmly and surely — as He proves us more and more,  from grace to grace,  as His new creation.
Let’s not let the enemy steal away this Word, let’s guard our hearts. Let’s not get excited about it only to fall away under heavy burdens and obligation, let’s respond in gratitude to this gift of grace. Let’s not get distracted by the world and the flesh, but let’s walk in the spirit and in fellowship with other believers. Let’s put our hands to this wondrous plow that tills up the soil of our hearts and turns hard packed, rocky, and weed riddled lives into fertile,  fruitful lives because of His touch,  His guidance,  His love that is the strength pushing that plow forward in our lives today and forever more. Amen.

My Daughter and I have started sharing our Bible Study online in video format:

The feedback on this Bible Study has been great on Facebook, so I thought that I would share on here as well.

Chosen, Beloved

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ. Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.  He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding. God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. – Ephesians 1:3‭-‬9 NLT
And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. – 1 Peter 2:8‭-‬9 NLT
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:2 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. – Ephesians 2:4‭-‬10 ESV

Who is King?

About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, “I will make myself king.” So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him. Now his father, King David, had never disciplined him at any time, even by asking, “Why are you doing that?” Adonijah had been born next after Absalom, and he was very handsome. – 1 Kings 1:5‭-‬6 NLT

What a commentary on our world today — prideful boasting, considering ourselves like kings, gathering people around us, being undisciplined, and valuing outward appearances. Also,  what a comment on the things in my own life that led me into deep troubles.
Pride, cunning, manipulation, rebellion – these things look beautiful to the worldly,  because they are ways by which they feel a false sense of personal power. They can find themselves drink on the wine of wickedness when living in these ways, and it is a dangerous trap.
Can’t we each remember a time when we’ve set our eyes on something that isn’t ours and claimed it as our own as if we had the right to have it just because we wanted it? Haven’t we each found those moments where we slipped out of “godliness with contentment” to suffer loss instead of gain in the end?

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. – 1 Timothy 6:6‭-‬8 NLT

In my old life, if I had money in my pocket,  or credit available,  and I saw something I wanted, I got it. I would tell myself that I had worked hard and deserved it. I might even foolishly tell myself that I would find a way to pay for it, that I should trust doors to open. And all of that was self centered,  not God centered. It was acting as if I were the King, master, and Lord of my own life – sounds horribly similar to the pride that got someone cast down our of heaven.
But I’m learning a new way. It involves someone different sitting upon the throne of my life. It involves me submitting myself to His will and dying to self. It involves me being a generous giver,  a mindful steward, a careful planner, a hard worker — but most importantly, a man in touch and drawing close to God.
When we got ready to build our house, I didn’t know whether we should build something small and minimalist just big enough for ourselves – or if we should build something big enough to provide ministry, Christian housing, housing for friends/family in need, etc from a dedicated portion of our home. I had read Habakkuk and didn’t want the beams and stones crying out to testify against me. I had read that it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than ac rich man enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. I truly wanted to do the will of God. So instead of charging ahead on my own because “we can afford it”, I went into the woods on our farmland and I prayed about it. When I came out from praying, there was, a double rainbow over the place where the house was to be built,  and it was made clear to me.
Yes, I surrendered it all to Him that day in prayer. If He had said no, that’s where we would go. Since He said yes, we are stepping into His will expecting His success. My point is that we can either be like Solomon who felt like a child unprepared to lead that has to rely on God’s wisdom and instruction – or we can be like Adonijah who thought that his manipulation would get him what he wanted.
God’s will is going to be done. Doesn’t it make sense to check ourselves,  to examine our true motives and desires against the Word of God – to test all of our thoughts, feelings, and opinions against the truth of the Word of God if we believe? Even David and Solomon fell short in many ways,  but they repented,  they sought God’s will, they didn’t just listen, but they obeyed.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. – James 1:22 NLT

Yucky Mouths

Tongue on fire

We have a homeless friend who spent time with us at church and who shared meals and Bible study with us several years ago when my daughter was 4. One time as we had a large group of rag tag folks all eating together in a restaurant on Sunday amongst the tables filled with suits and ties around us,  our friend opened his mouth wide to display his meth destroyed teeth to my daughter and said,  “This is why you need to brush your teeth.” This stuck with my daughter and she remembers to this day and is diligent in maintaining her beautiful smile.

Yesterday, we had a need come to us from a man whose teeth are in extremely bad shape and are abscessed to the point that he cannot eat. Drugs,  especially meth, do horrible damage to a person’s teeth and body. But our lesson isn’t about homeless people’s teeth. Our lesson is about how sin and the influence of the world gives us rotten mouths.

“You have heard that it was said to those of old,  ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable  to judgment.’  But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.  So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,  leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.  Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.  Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. – Matthew 5:21‭-‬26 ESV

I wonder how many of us let things slip out of our mouths to touch the ears of others with things that are yucky,  disgusting, vile, naughty, or inappropriate – things that do not glorify God?

And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand:  it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” – Matthew 15:10‭-‬11 ESV

Words really do matter:

“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad,  for the tree is known by its fruit.  You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.  The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.  I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,  for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:33‭-‬37 ESV

So how do we need to repent today in our words? Will we have yucky mouths today that speak forth death into the lives of those around us? Will our mouths participate in the filthy ways of the world or will they serve the Lord?

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. – Ephesians 4:29‭-‬32 ESV

If we are indeed followers of Christ,  if we indeed have the Spirit of Truth abiding within our vessel, if our faith is alive and not dead, let’s clean up our conversations and bridle our tongues and have that old rotten conversation replaced with what is the good, acceptable,  and perfect will of God. Let’s let His Word be upon our tongues and let’s see this Good News go forth to the nations.
