Q: Can you help me understand. Are our loved ones in Heaven, or waiting in some way for our Lord to return? I question this all the time.
A: I believe that the Word of God is true, so instead of giving you my feelings, thoughts, or opinions — I can share with you what I’ve found in the Word of God in my recent questions on this very same topic.
I don’t know all of the answers, but we can search together.
First. What is death?
Ecclesiastes 12:7 ESV
And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Hebrews 9:27 ESV
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
Psalm 146:4 ESV
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.
NOTE: I’ve found it helps to go and read the context surrounding the verses in that section of 20 or so verses in my Bible to better understand what is being said “in context” too.
Second. What does it say about those who have died?
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Third. What does it say about physical death’s purpose with regards to believers?
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. Fourth. What does it say about death with regards to those who do not have saving faith in Christ Jesus?
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Those were some of the big questions that I had. And I had to empty my head of any preconceived notions about these things, and even put aside what “good intentioned people” might have told me — to really listen to what the Word of God has to say about such things, and be willing to not just listen to what it says, but to hear what God says through His Word.
I still have lots more questions, but I figure that’s probably more than enough for tonight.
