Direction

If you think of “better” as pointing perfectly and directly north, and “worse” as pointing in all the other varying degrees on the compass — where will your “same” direction be taking you today?

While “temptation” will keep enticing you to give up “better” for “worse”…

“Correction” will get you headed back towards “better” if you are willing to receive it and “believe” it.

And the word “believe” isn’t just a mental grasp of a concept to BE-LEIVE is to BE-“LIVE”, to BE LIVING, to BE a LIVING example.

If you have a mental grasp of the concept but refuse to change, refuse correction, you’re actually worse off than the ignorant fool who hasn’t even received any directions and is headed in a random direction. The fool would still have a chance of “accidentally” heading north.

But if you intentionally resist correction, and refuse to turn back, what hope is there?

Remain teachable.

These false teachers are like unthinking animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed. They scoff at things they do not understand, and like animals, they will be destroyed. Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have done. They love to indulge in evil pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain among you. They delight in deception even as they eat with you in your fellowship meals. They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse. They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong. But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice. These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness. They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting. With an appeal to twisted sexual desires, they lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”
2 Peter 2:12‭-‬22 NLT

So Jesus told them this story: “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won’t he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders. When he arrives, he will call together his friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.’ In the same way, there is more joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God than over ninety-nine others who are righteous and haven’t strayed away! “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbors and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels when even one sinner repents.” To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.’ So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”’ “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. ’ “But his father said to the servants, ‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began. “Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. ‘Your brother is back,’ he was told, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.’ “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, but he replied, ‘All these years I’ve slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!’ “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”

Overwhelmed

If our day is to be overwhelming —

May it be overwhelmed with the realization that we need so much that is beyond ourselves,
May it be overwhelmed with the peace that comforts our mourning,
May it be overwhelmed with the humility of knowing how blessed we truly are,
May it be overwhelmed with a hunger and thirst for justice,
May it be overwhelmed with mercy towards others in their times of need,
May it be overwhelmed with a pureness of heart and motives,
May it be overwhelmed with work towards peace and understanding,
May it be overwhelmed with persecution for doing what is right.

These are the blessings that Jesus spoke about on the mount in Matthew 5, and if we are to be overwhelmed with anything, let it be these. God bless!

One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them. “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way. “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven! “You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the altar. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God. “When you are on the way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. Otherwise, your accuser may hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to an officer, and you will be thrown into prison. And if that happens, you surely won’t be free again until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. So if your eye—even your good eye —causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your hand—even your stronger hand —causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. “You have heard the law that says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.’ But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. “You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord .’ But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one. “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow. “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

My Smule Setups

Okay, let’s get right to the money for folks who are looking for practical advice/help based on my mistakes and experiences these past years on Smule. (I’m @_SparkleCityHop_ on Smule https://www.smule.com/_SparkleCityHop_Come sing with me!!!)

HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY RECORDINGS FOR SMULE???!!

If I was going to give you an order to focus on improving your quality of recording for smule, here it is:

  1. Room Acoustic Treatment
    1. Even if it is just recording in a closet full of clothes, or hanging blankets, or finding a quiet place, or singing inside a car that isn’t running/moving — the more that you can get rid of background noise, echoes, etc. you are starting out with a better quality source audio at step one. This helps whether you have a full blown condenser mic setup or are just using your phone and ear buds. DO THIS FIRST!!!
      1. Options based on budget:
        1. Professional Whisper Room vocal booth ($3000-5000) http://whisperroom.com
        2. DIY Build your own vocal booth ($1200-2000) https://www.reddit.com/r/audioengineering/comments/8agxps/has_anyone_tried_building_a_diy_whisper_room_does/ and https://www.gearslutz.com/board/studio-building-acoustics/
        3. Add Acoustic treatment to an existing room ($100-500) https://ehomerecordingstudio.com/acoustic-treatment-101/
        4. Kaotica Eyeball Mobile Microphone Isolation ($200) http://kaoticaeyeball.com
        5. Hang some heavy blankets
        6. Sing in a closet full of clothes
        7. Sit in your parked car with it not running
  2. Ring Light
    1. Having a full sized ring light to hold your phone or tablet for you and provide consistent lighting is a game changer — even if you are still just using headphones. DO THIS SECOND!!!
      1. Options based on budget:
        1. Stellar Diva II 18″ Ring light plus side lighting (around $450) https://www.stellarlightingsystems.com/stellar-new-diva-18-cel-r18c-ring-light-w-tray-2-led-sun-panel-lights-bundle/
        2. Stellar Lighting RGB Chroma LED 18″ Ring Light (around $250) https://www.stellarlightingsystems.com/stellar-rgb-led-chroma-star-diva-ring-light-18/
        3. Stellar Diva II 18″ Ring Light (around $200) https://www.stellarlightingsystems.com/the-new-stellar-diva-ll-pro-ring-light-photo-stand-and-tray/
        4. Stellar Table Top Ring Light (around $45) https://www.stellarlightingsystems.com/stellar-table-top-usb-led-ring-light-dimmable-and-bicolor-kit-for-video-conference-lighting-for-zoom-meeting-videocalls-streaming-youtube-tiktok-makeup-light-modes-with-phone-holder/
        5. NOTE: You can find other lighting kits on Amazon and eBay that are cheaper, but I can’t speak to the quality of their build or support from the manufacturer. Stellar Lighting is a professional company and you can talk to real people for support. They have never sent me anything for free or sponsored me, but have earned my loyalty by their products and support. They are the BEST IMO and well worth paying for quality the first time.
  3. iOS Device
    1. Even if you love Android for your phone, get a dedicated iPhone or iPad for use with Smule. Even before you go out and buy a pre-amp trying to improve your sound quality, just switch to an iOS device and it will make a bigger difference. Trust me, friend — quit fighting the uphill Android device battle and complaining about it on Singtopia. And having a dedicated device waiting in your favorite quiet place just makes recording so much easier. DO THIS THIRD!!!
  4. Good Pre-Amp + XLR Mic + Mic Stand
    1. Decide your budget and choose from the below based on your budget for a preamp (but it is better to buy bigger once than waste money buying multiple times):
      1. FocusRite Scarlet Solo or 2i2 + USB adapter for compatibility with your device + dedicated charger (around $250 all in all) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QR6Z1JB/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_DFCCZ81JTCD0PDX1MJ85
      2. iRig Pro I/O + iRig charger (around $200 all in all) https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigproio/
      3. For iOS lightning adapter devices: iRig HD 2 (around $100) https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irighd2/
      4. For Android and iOS 3.5mm headphone plug devices: Saramonic SmartRig II Preamp (around $30) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0719KPL7W/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_WJF2VK35XYVW79V62YCZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
    2. Decide on your budget and choose from the below based on your budget for a mic
      1. Shure SM7B ($400 – you’ll need the FocusRite above, or a CloudLifter CL1, or a professional preamp for this mic to shine – I’ve included it because it is my “next step”) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002E4Z8M/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_QV9T26T0DH6GHCFAX910
      2. Rode NT1A with Shock Mount ($250 – this mic is quite bright and requires phantom power, and you need a VERY QUIET ROOM FOR RECORDING, but remains one of my favorite condensors for the money, clarity, and detail in recordings — good with any preamp) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QAUOKS/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_83QGSG8XPKG5GSB2G8XK
      3. Shure Beta 58a ($150 – this mic is great for environments where there is background noise that you want to avoid picking up in your recording because it is a super-cardiod – it is good with any preamp) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002BACB4/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_7DMVWH5XVR7W6E6NSK66
      4. NOTE: Some other folks use Blue Yeti USB mics and a USB adapter for around $200 — but I personally don’t like the quality of their preamps or how they emphasize certain frequency ranges. I’d rather my source recording be flat/realistic and I can make changes in post if I want to EQ a certain range (not really applicable for Smule, but for other recording. If you want feedback on this option, I’m just not your guy because I really haven’t tried them other than my first impressions inside Guitar Center and listening to others who use them.
    3. You need something to hold your mic for you.
      1. If you want to be able to move around and move your mic during performances, I can recommend the Rode PSA1 boom arm. I’ve tried and compared it to others, and it is hard to beat for $100. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D7UYBO/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_EHCFHFAF91DM4VFRJV5S
      2. Otherwise, get a basic mic stand from your local Guitar Center or similar. (around $20-$30) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019NY2PKG/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_2PQ57GC2EAZ7E7Y59Z3Y?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
  5. More-Me Setup + Studio Headphones
    1. Once you have a quality mic and preamp, the next thing you need is a real-time way to hear yourself in detail while you are singing — that doesn’t introduce any delay at all (doesn’t have to go into your phone and be played back to you by the app itself). Do this with the Behringer MicroMon More-Me monitor and some good quality headphones. Seriously, it is a complete game changer when you hear your own voice in perfect detail while singing. Headphone choice depends on your budget. It is better to spend more the first time than buy twice later.
      1. Behringer MicroMon (around $25) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KUCQXY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_MAYF0E68RMJD94QKM0M5
      2. I can personally recommend the following headphones based on budget:
        1. AudioTechnica ATH-M70x (around $300) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SC80YLM/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_XYJ5S13CK3FCYCY6XEBK
        2. AudioTechnica ATH-M50x (around $150) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR86/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_H8Q9ZE2KNP6WHAPFDB9R
        3. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm (around $150) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NL5SM/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_A3ZM3C54ZG9XQVY3HF4Y
        4. Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (around $100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IT0IHOY/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_HDQA3BX1JS3435W5JQDG
        5. Sony MDR7506 (around $100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AJIF4E/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_FE7KV19QX7T5W82RNHBA
  6. Power Conditioning + TC Helicon Correct XT
    1. There is electro-magnetic hum/distortion that makes it into your recording setup through the power lines in your house. Adding a commercial level power conditioning that all of your gear is plugged into can cut that out and make your signal floor quieter — similar to the way that your acoustic treatment to the room lowers your signal floor by decreasing background noise
      1. Not all “power conditioning” is equal. I recommend Furman Merit Series 8 for the cost (around $200) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CHV3H5G/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_NEWTDA7EWWSHVM78NKDC
      2. Or if you want to get serious and have room in the budget, the Furman Elite Series is nice (around $400) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WV3J6O/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_368SJHKTR7Q1RW873KX1
    2. Recording studios have sound technicians running the sound boards in real time to adjust levels to prevent feedback, to keep signal from getting too high or too low, adding compression, etc. to make adjustments on the fly. These things are what the Correct XT does for you by just plugging it in and setting everything to automatic. It isn’t “necessary”, and it isn’t as good as having a live audio tech running your sound board, but when you’re alone in a vocal booth by yourself — its set it and forget it nature covers things quite nicely. I don’t normally engage the soft auto-tune function (it isn’t like T Pain auto-tune BTW, but subtle) for Smule. NOTE: It is handy if you’re singing live or busking and your voice isn’t quite warmed up or you have a bit of a cold — it just helps knock the edges off. It will NOT make it sound like you can sing if you can’t hold a tune. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004GWFQB6/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_3ST2387P9RKRHBJ7NT4E

BACKGROUND/HISTORY FOR MY RECOMENDATIONS

You can break my progression down into:

  1. My phone + its provided headphones
    1. If you have an non-lightning adapter iPhone + the Apple 3.5mm headphones, this is a great inexpensive option
    2. If you have Android or a lightning adapter iPhone, this isn’t a great option, but it is cheap
  2. Zoom H6 + Seinheisser Studio headphones
    1. Everything in this was a mistake. Do not make my same mistakes. Enough said.
  3. iRig Pre + Rode NT1A Mic
    1. This is a good basic setup, but leaves you without a great option for self monitoring that isn’t delayed
    2. If you have an iPhone with lightning adapter, get the iRig Pro I/O instead, along with the power adapter
    3. If you have an Android, go with the Saramonic preamp instead
  4. Add “MoreMe” monitoring
    1. Aside from acoustic treatment, this is one of the best upgrades I’ve made
    2. Real-time monitoring of yourself with no delays and complete control of mic vs music levels at your fingertips
    3. Seriously, you need this if you are using an external preamp
  5. Samsung Tablet + Saramonic preamp + Rode Boom arm + 4 channel headphone amp
    1. This was “okay” but I should have gone with an iPad for SO MANY REASONS
    2. The Rode Boom arm is so perfect for moving around quietly while singing and keeping the mic in the right position
    3. I love being able to switch up to a different type of headphones for longer sessions or listen on Studio monitors to review before saving
  6. TC Helicon Correct XT + Power conditioning + Acoustic treatment
    1. This was all about sound quality
    2. Acoustic treatment to the room changed the whole game. Seriously. DO THIS FIRST!!! EVEN IF YOU USE HEADPHONES AND YOUR PHONE!!!
    3. I love how much cleaner my sound is before it gets into the preamp now
  7. iPad Air + iRig Pro I/O + Ring Light
    1. These three things really changed the game, but represent some significant investment in my setup
    2. If you’re on Android and serious about improving your recordings, just go ahead and plan on having a dedicated iPhone or iPad device eventually
    3. Going to a digital input for my preamp got rid of all that weird hum while charging, etc.
    4. Having a ring light makes a huge difference visually — and Stellar Lighting costs a bit more, but it lasts

I discovered Smule in 2016, but it was just a passing interest. I had never really sang much other than in the car, in the shower, and maybe if we were at a bar that had a karaoke machine. But I loved to sing.

In 2017, I got my Samsung Note 8, which came with AKG tuned headphones. This was my first real improvement in recording quality, and it is also when I got interested in singing on Smule:

Smule Summer 2017 AKG Headphones

I got a chance in 2017 to sing in the choir at church, and I started to put my first effort into putting together an actual “setup” for Smule recording. I had never really sang with a microphone, etc. so this was all pretty new to me. Since I already had some camera and video recording gear, I found that my biggest challenge was that I needed to be able to hear BOTH the music AND my own voice WITH NO DELAYS!

So I came up with something that worked for me for a short while:

However, I quickly grew tired of not being able to listen and review the songs in stereo without having to change cabling around, mess with levels, etc. I also found that my best time for singing was late at night, and I didn’t want to keep my family awake with my late night singing.

So I worked on a DIY studio / vocal booth setup in my basement underneath our stairs:

Recently, I decided that I would really like to have a similar level of quality for monitoring while singing, but I would like to be able to take it with me to perform recordings in different locations.

So I have come up with this setup that I am currently implementing along-side my studio setup:

Smule Fall 2018 Portable

I then added on to these setups over Fall 2018 and into Winter 2019 to include a nice scissor boom for my mic, acoustic treatment for the room,

Smule Fall 2018 More

And I made some additional improvements that included a vocal pedal and lighting improvements:

Smule Winter 2019

And then I switched to iPad and an iRig Pro I/O for digital audio:

Future Considerations:

I currently have all of this in a small vocal booth in my basement built underneath the stairs. I have the following considerations for the future:

  • Switch to a FocusRite Scarlet 2i2 or similar for my main preamp
  • Add a Shure SM7B mic (and possibly a CloudLifter paired with it – this will be much better for recording in my office than the condenser because of less acoustic treatment in the office)
  • Set up a second recording area at my desk in my office since I now have a Autonomous SmartDesk that allows me to work sitting or standing. (need to add sound proofing, full second set of gear for recording, background drops for green screen, etc.)
  • More Acoustic Treatment in vocal booth (raised floor, two levels of solid core doors, additional thickness of exterior walls and caulking to make it air tight)
  • Improved quiet ventilation for vocal booth (especially as it becomes more and more air tight)
  • Lighting effects for background (in vocal booth and office setup)
  • Device with improved camera quality for vocal booth
  • Wall mounted TV/Monitor to display via HDMI (instead of having to view on smaller phone/tablet screen in vocal booth)
  • Setup for streaming recordings/performances to multiple services simultaneously

None of this is necessary just for good Smule recordings. I know folks that seem to get better recordings out of their iPhone and iPhone headphones. But I use this studio for other voiceover, recording, and broadcasting needs, so the key to me is making it easy to sit down and get right to recording, reviewing, and broadcasting quickly and easily, with expected, reproducible results.

Stay tuned for more improvements.

Unwavering

But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.
James 1:6‭-‬8 NLT

Faith in God alone.

What gets you through the day?

What would you not be willing to “put down” or “do without”?

If you think over your day and the answer to those questions is some type of entertainment, hobby, drug, activity, etc. — if it is not your dedicated time and relationship and trust in God, it is time to repent and surrender fully to God.

Do you want stability?

Seek what you can lay down today.

Seek how you can draw closer to the Lord intentionally and purposefully.

What will your mind meditate on?

Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
Joshua 1:8 NLT

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord , meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
Psalms 1:1‭-‬6 NLT

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory. So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him. In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and he lives in all of us. Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
Colossians 3:1‭-‬17 NLT

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will. That’s why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God. But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Romans 8:5‭-‬15 NLT

So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.” For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever.” And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:13‭-‬25 NLT

Exclusivity

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
John 14:6 NLT

In today’s world, the concept of there being One Truth, one singular, exclusive way — goes against the social norms of letting everyone decide for themselves what is right or wrong, etc.

But we hear Jesus making such an “exclusive” statement such as this — and even though it is no different than any other singular truths — like the truth that light in a certain frequency range is the color green — like the truth that people with certain DNA and body parts are male/female — like the truth that people who refuse to believe the truth and make up their own opinions don’t “change the truth” but are delusional and deceived — like the truth that some of the people who consider themselves to be more spiritual and discerning than you and I are quick to forward and share things on Facebook that are clearly lies and deceit that could have been uncovered by a quick check on the source of the message they are passing along.

This week, I saw people who consider themselves in spiritual leadership forwarding messages about “free money” from a clearly and obviously fake Tyler Perry profile. The love of money and the spreading of that message of lies instead of spreading the Word of God not only wastes opportunity, but it is damaging to their testimony even while it clearly reveals something that “isn’t quite right”. If they can’t see the obvious lies, what lies are they passing along as “prophecies” to an unwitting people because they can’t tell the voice of their father from the voice of The Father!

I’m saying this, because there is One Truth, and those serving up attractive and comfortable and worldly lies aren’t serving the Lord.

Don’t look at the Word of God, at the One Truth, then decide for yourself another truth and then tell me that you are in an active relationship and powerful ministry for the Lord. The light has nothing part with darkness. Repent, you who are deceived, and have your garments cleaned by the blood of the lamb, and stand firm to the end. If you aren’t sure that something is true, hold your tongue, wait before clicking that forward button, do not continue being tricked and deceived into spreading lies. Stop chasing after attention, likes, followers, passionate responses from others, etc. Seek the will of God, and do it.

So someone, rightly so is going to say to this, “You’re good at seeing specks, but where is your log, brother?” And I will answer you as honestly and truthfully as I am able. My log is that I have listened too closely to those who are very educated in the scriptures and who speak and recite the written Word eloquently, and I have not listened closely enough to those who are actually living out lives of sacrificial love towards their brothers and sisters, towards the lost, and even towards their enemies. I have longed at times to be a religious teacher instead of a suffering servant discipline of Christ. I have set my eyes upon the religious pyramid and sought to stand up front and speak from my loud mouth more than from the quiet but steady example of my life.

There is only one way. No one comes to the Father but through Christ Jesus — not by building up a great reputation, not by building great religious legacies around us, not by joining a church, not by saying a certain prayer, not by water touching our bodies in a certain ceremony, not by being a certain tribe or nationality or community of people.

Exclusivity. Only by Christ.

If you believe, then you know your place, you know what lies ahead, and you know your purpose for today.

If you don’t, if you can’t, if you won’t — do you know what is hindering you, what is keeping you away?

Is it worth your being eternally wrong?

Will you not sell ot the truth for yourself — not through some guy talking on TV or up front, but on your own, in the Word of God, in learning how to truly pray “with God” not “at God”?

We can do this together, friend. He is THE WAY. His name is JESUS!

No Secrets

All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. ”
John 3:20‭-‬21 NLT

“All who do evil…”

Now we know that man is not without sin (Romans 3:23, Isaiah 53:6, 1 John 1:8, Romans 5:12), and that this is not to say simply that there are those who are born good and those who are born evil from their mother’s womb (Psalm 51:5, Psalm 58:3, Ephesians 2:3, Romans 7:18). So this is not speaking of a certain people versus another in a physical sense or a genetic sense or of a certain lineage of peoples, but of a position of a man’s life in relation to God and God’s will (Galatians 5:17, Ecclesiastes 7:20).

“hate the light and refuse to go near it”

To be in darkness and to hate the light is a “familiar” place for mankind (1 John 1:5-7, John 11:10) — we each either are currently there or have been there before (Ephesians 5:8, Colossians 1:13, Acts 26:18) — because of the influence of sin (Ephesians 6:12, Mark 7:20-23) we have at times chosen to follow our selfish and sinful desires instead of what is good (James 4:17, 1 John 3:4-10, Galatians 5:19-21, Joshua 24:15)

“for fear their sins will be exposed.”

Our sin is already known and seen by God (Psalm 90:8, 1 John 3:20, Isaiah 46:9-10), so this doesn’t speak of men hoping to hide their sins from God ( Isaiah 29:15), or of them fearing God ( Proverbs 1:7, Proverbs 8:13), but fearing that others might know their sinful desires ( Matthew 10:28, Acts 5:29, Matthew 6:1-34). Confession to one another is a fearful thing to men who either A) only care about their reputation amongst men or B) are condemned by their own guilt and shame.

“But those who do what is right come into the light”

This does not say “those who do what is right get to then come into the light”, which would be a false, works based perspective ( Ephesians 2:8-9) — but it says as one continuous thought and identifier which is more along the lines of “those doing right are in the light” and “those in the light do right”.

Appreciation vs Flattery

Praise-Flattery-sign

John 13:34-35 ESV

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Ephesians 4:32 ESV

Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 ESV

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

Proverbs 29:5 ESV

A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

Proverbs 26:24-28 ESV

Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling. A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

Proverbs 28:23ESV

Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with his tongue.

Chapter 2 of Dale Carnegie’s widely successful book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” discusses “the craving to be appreciated” and quotes John Dewey, an American philosopher who said that the deepest urge in human nature is “the desire to be important”. Now, I’m not encouraging you to follow the ways of the world or to put your trust in the philosophies of men — but I can tell you that they see something that is true about the human nature — men and women alike who have not found and fully trusted in their identity in Christ crave to have their self-esteem stroked and inflated to Christ-like statuses. That book goes on to say of appreciation that “showing sincere appreciation can change a person’s life” and I can appreciate this as truth — and continues to say in contrast about flattery:

“Of course flattery seldom works with discerning people. It is shallow, selfish and insincere. It ought to fail and it usually does. True, some people are so hungry, so thirsty, for appreciation that they will swallow anything, just as a starving man will eat grass and fishworms.”

And those looking to be sincere and effective need to know the difference between the two, so they aren’t so much attempting to manipulate others with flattery, as they are to encourage those who are in need of encouragement. As Carnegie points out in his book, “The difference between appreciation and flattery? That is simple. One is sincere and the other insincere. One comes from the heart out; the other from the teeth out. One is unselfish; the other selfish. One is universally admired; the other universally condemned.” Yes, the two have very different application and intent.

A good leader (and by virtue a good servant first) will see a proud and rebellious man and bring to him or her the correct level of correction to deflate the ego and bring him back down to a reasonable, useful, and practical level — and will also see the one hurt, afraid, unsure and bring to him or her the appreciation that is love wrapped up so beautifully for them to open from their Good Good Father. But those tools weilded without thought or discernment are even more dangerous than taking food away from the starving or giving an abundance of food to the obese diabetic.

James 1:5 ESV

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

James 3:17 ESV

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.

The Heart of Praise

And if discerning people can tell the difference between appreciation and flattery, how much moreso can God? I wonder how often we have gone to God with empty words of praise, saying “Thank you God” right through our teeth, because we have something lined up to ask of Him immediately following that false worship, not because it true worship coming from a place of gratitude? If our praise has a selfish purpose and goal, then it is not praise, but it is flattery — this is the very thing that is a stench in the nostrils of many discerning people about things like “prosperity gospel” where people are taught to “do this so that God has to do that”. Praise is sincere, flattery is insincere. One pleases God, while the other is sin.

Lord, give us wisdom to lead and to serve, and give us wisdom to submit ourselves to those in authority as long as it does not lead us into temptation or rebellion. Help us to be sincere in all we do. Lord, teach us to find all of our worth and value in who you have declared us to be so that we might not be swayed by the flattery of manipulators — and so that we might not be hindered from accepting encouragement from others. Yes, we know that anything good in us is Christ — but you have made us a new creation, and we do not find our identity in the old, but in the new — so let anything that is honest appreciation bring glory and honor to YOUR NAME, Oh Lord, and let any flatteries fall dead at our ears and never feed the parts of self that breed pride. Lord, give us discernment and a hunger for you above all else. Teach us to seek first the Kingdom of God and YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS and to not seek to build up our own kingdoms or self-righteousness. Lead us to encourage and appreciate others from our hearts and our actions first, so that any words are clearly demonstrated as love flowing from you. Lead us, oh Lord. Amen.

Fruitless?

When fruit trees don’t bear fruit, what’s the problem?

Do you have an apple tree that hasn’t produced fruit, or a berry bush with no berries? There are several reasons why fruit trees or shrubs may not bear fruit, but you can sift through the alternatives and hopefully find an answer to your particular problem.

REF: https://www.google.com/amp/s/phys.org/news/2007-05-northern-gardening-fruit-trees-dont.amp

Then He began telling them this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree that had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find any; so he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and have found none. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground [depleting the soil and blocking the sunlight]?’ But he replied to him, ‘Let it alone, sir, [just] one more year until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; and if it bears fruit after this, fine; but if not, cut it down.’”
LUKE 13:6‭-‬9 AMP

In this story, we find two men — one seemingly in authority and another who is seemingly under authority, if we go simply by our worldly understanding of property owners and hired workers. But it is the man who is seemingly in authority, and who is initially giving commands before knowing or asking the reason “Why…” who does in fact ask his hired vineyard-keeper the question of “Why?” And it is the seemingly wise and understanding vineyard keeper who does not just see the facts of the moment, but the opportunity of the future for this fruitless, seemingly useless fig tree.

Before we start making one of these in order minds into a hero and the other into a villain, which seems to be a natural progression of our minds — let’s think about the two men and their positions of responsibility and attention.

I find that a key component here is not that the vineyard owner is spiteful or wrathful towards the tree, but that he recognizes the value and resources of the land that he owns, and in his mind, I believe that he wants to manage those resources wisely and responsibly. His view and area of responsibilities is probably over many things other than this one vineyard, as he is the owner and has a hired man who is responsible as the vineyard keeper for this particular vineyard. He prompts the one who is tending the vineyard — the one who knows these trees and plants in his vineyard most closely and personally — about the apparent uselessness of this fig tree. He says he has come 3 years looking for fruit and has found none.

And he says, cut it down, why does it use up the ground and resources and provide nothing back in turn. It doesn’t seem that he has any malicious intent or ill will towards that particular tree, but his goal is to see his land and resources used widely to bear fruit. He sees a fruitless tree as a parasite upon the land, using up its resources but never giving back what is expected of it.

But it is the worker, the man seemingly under authority who offers a solution. And in this solution, he offers a talkin ot possibility to the land owner. What was seemingly a worthless, useless tree — he speaks of the opportunity of it beating fruit in just one more year. This would seem more practical, the opportunity of fruit in just one more year, than tearing it down, planting and waiting for another to grow to fruit bearing maturity. And the vineyard-keeper wouldn’t be very good at his job if he made a habit of keeping worthless plants around forever, so we expect that it is not blind hope that he has for this fig tree, but that he is close enough to it to see and know something about it that tells him this is not just a parasite, a waste, but an opportunity.

And I think that it is pretty amazing that some of the best opportunities before us come from not just being aware and prepared for the moment, but recognizing the opportunity and being bold enough ti step in, take ownership and do our best in that moment of opportunity. Imagine the opportunity that this offers come next year, when the vineyard owner returns — he will see that the vineyard-keeper was willing to put in extra work on behalf of the opportunity. Even if there was no fruit then, he could say to his worker, “Thank you for trying even harder all this past year, when it would have been less work for you to just cut it down and cast it into the fire.” The is an opportunity for praise and appreciation, even in their reaching a point of unity in finally giving up on this tree.

But… what if…

What if, the plea of the vineyard-keeper process itself fruitful and useful. Wouldn’t the owner get what he actually wanted in the first place? Fruit! And wouldn’t the wisdom of his vineyard keeper and his willingness to work even harder on behalf of the owner be a cause for praise and maybe even celebration? Yes, if the goal was fruit, then the man in authority would be happy ther next year for sure!

But let’s stop for a minute, because we may have assumed the “right heartedness” of these two a little too much. What if the owner was more interested in handing out commands, being in charge, and always being right? I wonder if that were the case why he would asked the question why and allowed a response seems an explanation. Many in positions of authority may find themselves ruling from on high, passing down commands, squashing dissent, and never listening to valuable input that might help from training down opportunities that just need a little extra attention rather than having to start over from scratch.

And some wrong hearted people who are under authority do not care to listen closely to those over them and to understand the actual need and reason behind a discussion rather than just resent the “command”. Many are not willing to take upon themselves “more work” than would normally be expected in order to possibly bring more value to the table. Many are just looking for the easiest way through the day and path of least resistance, missing opportunities to shine, to thrive, to excel — uninspired and settled in their complacency and the fruitlessness of their own lives.

I’m glad this man in authority was willing to listen, and this man under authority was willing to offer more than what was expected. Just think if we would behave in this manner in all of our relationships with one another, how much more fruitful things would go fir everyone. Husbands and wives, parents and children, supervisors and workers — leaders and peoples could benefit greatly from regimes that are not oppressive and cooperation that is productive and unified and selfless.

I wonder how many of us can look to areas of our own lives where we have been more like a parasite — whether from a position of authority or subjection — we just haven’t been hearing fruit into those circumstances like we should have been.

I find it interesting that this story of a fruitless tree in verses 6-9 of Luke 13 is right after the call to repentance of verses 1-5, and is followed by Jesus healing on the Sabbath, then by a parable and teachings on the Kingdom of God.

Let’s look at 10-17 to see a contrast between wrong hearted and right hearted:

Now Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had an illness caused by a spirit (demon). She was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your illness.” Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood erect again and she began glorifying and praising God. But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, “There are six days in which work ought to be done; so come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” But the Lord replied to him, “You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? And this woman, a daughter (descendant) of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” As He was saying this, all His opponents were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things that were being done by Him.
LUKE 13:10‭-‬17 AMP

These Pharisees thought themselves to be in authority in this situation. They thought that they were in a position where they could command and judge without question. They saw themselves as vineyard owners who would have given the command “Cut her down! Cast her into the fire!” Without asking “Why?” If we look back to verses 1-5 where Jesus was calling for repentance, we can get some insight into where they would have been coming from:

Just at that time some people came who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate [the governor] had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus replied to them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans because they have suffered in this way? I tell you, no; but unless you repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways and live changed lives], you will all likewise perish. Or do you assume that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed were worse sinners than all the others who live in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent [change your old way of thinking, turn from your sinful ways and live changed lives], you will all likewise perish.”
LUKE 13:1‭-‬5 AMP

Some (if not all) of these Pharisees would have thought this woman that Jesus healed was bent and afflicted because of her sin allowing the demonic influence to affect her, and that her bent state was a reflection of God’s judgment upon her as compared to what they saw as their own upright and righteous outward assurance that they thought reflected God’s favor and honor upon them. They would have asked, why are our resources wasted on worthless people like her, who bring no value into the community.

We see mindsets throughout history, where the handicapped, the elderly, the weak — where those with challenges are considered cast asides within society — considered more trouble than they are worth. There have even been (and still are nations) that would consider themselves “civilized” who have put down or sterilized their unwanted — even those who kill them in the womb rather than allow them to become a burden and parasite, using up resources that are “better spent elsewhere”. Seemingly reasonable individuals have made seemingly justifiable decisions about avoiding others in all kinds of ways because of their differences. Yes, this is the world we live in, and if you’ve only thought of other names to point a finger at up until this point, when was the last time you had them at your table?

In one more chapter ahead in Luke 14, we will read about Jesus still showing of the Sabbath and he will explain:

Now Jesus began telling a parable to the invited guests when He noticed how they had been selecting the places of honor at the table, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down [to eat] at the place of honor, since a more distinguished person than you may have been invited by the host, and he who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your place,’ and then, in disgrace you proceed to take the last place. But when you are invited, go and sit down [to eat] at the last place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; and then you will be honored in the presence of all who are at the table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled [before others], and he who habitually humbles himself (keeps a realistic self-view) will be exalted.” Jesus also went on to say to the one who had invited Him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you in return and that will be your repayment. But when you give a banquet or a reception, invite the poor, the disabled, the lame, and the blind, and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous (the just, the upright).”
LUKE 14:7‭-‬14 AMP

I wonder how infrequently fruit of this type has been evident upon our tree: “But when you give a banquet or a reception, invite the poor, the disabled, the lame, and the blind, and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you” — has it EVER been found upon your tree? Does this sound like any dinner or banquet you’ve ever had at your home? Or even at your church? Probably not, unless it was some intentional benefit for “their cause” where you patted yourselves on the back for helping them by letting them sit with you for a meal and writing a check to some organization so they can again be sent off ti be given away from sight and mind until conscience bothers us again.

Yes, we all need to repent in this area I believe. I believe that it is so natural in our sinful nature to exclude what appears different — that we must be intentional in this area until that is reversed to the point that we not just see useless people and parasites that are using up our resources — but that we begin seeing opportunities to invest more into the lives of those around us. We need to have wisdom and vision like the vineyard-keeper in the parable and like Jesus healing the bent and bound woman.

Do you think that you know better? Do you think that toy are better? Do you think that they have sinned worse than you so that you might look down your nose at another and withhold forgiveness? That grudge you hold because someone has done you wrong, that division that has seeped in the middle of relationships, that condescending attitude you have taken towards others, that grumbling you have made against others, those lies thou have told to put yourself in a better light, that gossip you have spread to slander the reputation of another, that hardness in your heart that is setting you against your brother or sister — are you bent over and bound today? Do you need healing and restoration in your heart even more than that lady needed in her physical body?

Will you put the only fertilizer to the tree that will see it grow and bear fruit? Or will you refuse to repent and see the tree be cut down and cast into the fire?

Jesus journeyed on through cities and villages, teaching and making His way toward Jerusalem. And someone asked Him, “Lord, will only a few be saved [from the penalties of the last judgment]?” And He said to them, “Strive to enter through the narrow door [force aside unbelief and the attractions of sin]; for many, I tell you, will try to enter [by their own works] and will not be able. Once the head of the house gets up and closes the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door [again and again], saying, ‘Lord, open to us!’ then He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you are from [for you are not of My household].’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; but He will say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from; depart from M e , all you evildoers !’ In that place there will be weeping [in sorrow and pain] and grinding of teeth [in distress and anger] when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out and driven away. And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and they will sit down [and feast at the table] in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
LUKE 13:22‭-‬30 AMP

And remember:

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which is taking place to test you [that is, to test the quality of your faith], as though something strange or unusual were happening to you. But insofar as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, keep on rejoicing, so that when His glory [filled with His radiance and splendor] is revealed, you may rejoice with great joy. If you are insulted and reviled for [bearing] the name of Christ, you are blessed [happy, with life-joy and comfort in God’s salvation regardless of your circumstances], because the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you [and indwelling you–He whom they curse, you glorify]. Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or a thief, or any sort of criminal [in response to persecution], or as a troublesome meddler interfering in the affairs of others; but if anyone suffers [ill-treatment] as a Christian [because of his belief], he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God [because he is considered worthy to suffer] in this name. For it is the time [destined] for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not respect or believe or obey the gospel of God? A nd if it is difficult for the righteous to be saved , what will become of the godless and the sinner ? Therefore, those who are ill-treated and suffer in accordance with the will of God must [continue to] do right and commit their souls [for safe-keeping] to the faithful Creator.
1 PETER 4:12‭-‬19 AMP

Does your tree bear fruit?

But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes the sinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do. But if you are guided and led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the Law. Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control), idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies], envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, and other things like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature together with its passions and appetites. If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage–our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit]. We must not become conceited, challenging or provoking one another, envying one another.
GALATIANS 5:16‭-‬26 AMP

If we say that we are “Christians”, if we say that we believe, if we’re say that we have surrendered our lives and asked Him to be our Lord and Savior — if we have been baptized not just by the water of a religious tradition but by the fire of a spiritual transformation, being truly raised ti new life in Christ — then we are proclaiming that He lives in us, that the Holy Spirit of God comes als lovers and abides within us, His vessels, His people, His new creations, His Kingdom of Heaven come down ti earth for His will to be done.

Is this the truth of your life today, “Christian”?

When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are released from your illness.” Then He laid His hands on her; and immediately she stood erect again and she began glorifying and praising God.

Glorify and praise God if this is your story!

Or if it isn’t, then repent, while there is time.

The [Holy] Spirit and the bride (the church, believers) say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wishes take and drink the water of life without cost.

Thankful Hearts

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. – Colossians 3:16 NLT

I wonder how often other folks forget how much they have to be thankful about? It happens to me sometimes. It happened to me at least once today. Probably more than once.

I’m very conscious and aware that I grumbled and complained today. And how ridiculous is that – knowing how blessed I truly am – that I should grumble and complain, foolishly thinking that I deserve for things to go better, or easier, or smoother, or “more like I had planned”.

Several things happened today, and I fell short of expectations and commitments and responsibilities — repeatedly throughout the day. Time after time, the circumstances of the day, the immediate needs, and the focus of my attention — left me way behind on looking the part of a “well put together, reliable person”.

And I felt foolish because of all of it. Hindsight tells us, “If you had planned better… If you had allowed more time… If you had insisted on this/that…” the self incrimination never ends if we let it run free in our minds. And then we grumble both at ourselves and at our circumstances for no good or profitable reason but to simmer in it like a slow cooked roast sunk up to its top in the bitter herbs and seasonings. What a sad lot it is when we forget just how much we have to be thankful for!!!

What a sad lot it is when we forget that God has a purpose in all of it. So will I forget my blessings, forget my grumblings, call it a day, resign myself to have been defeated today by my shortcomings, and go to bed restless?

Or will I consider, confess, and commit to examining, learning, and being changed — even overwhelmed — by the thankfulness that I should have for so much more than those specific shortcomings?

Will I be thankful and grateful and full of love and hope — or a prisoner to something else?

The verse above says “to God with thankful hearts” — what if we believed that way, lived that way — “to God with thankful hearts“?

It reminds me of that passage in Colossians:

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
Colossians 3:23 NLT

And what a burdensome command that must be to someone who either doesn’t know or has forgotten how sweet and good the Lord is! I don’t say that with outstretched finger, but with self examining precision in confirming that “He is still working on me”. He is still, by way of the Holy Spirit, of Christ who lives in me, I am being convicted of sin, disciplined in love, and encouraged into obedience and service.

Thankful people can worship wholeheartedly. Gratitude opens our hearts to God’s peace and enables us to put on love. Discontented people constantly calculate what’s wrong with their lot in life. To increase your thankfulness, take an inventory of all you have (including your relationships, memories, abilities, and family, as well as material possessions). Use the inventory for prayers of gratitude. On Sunday, before worship, quit rushing around; instead, take time to reflect on reasons for thanks. Declare Sunday as your “thanks, faith, and hope” day. Celebrate God’s goodness to you, and ask in prayer for all your needs for the week ahead.” – Life Application Study Bible Devotion

So, we must turn away from one way and turn thi the other…

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. – Philippians 4:6‭-‬8 NLT

Lord, help us to not be like the foolish, rebellious generation of Israelites who turned an 11 day journey into 40 years in the wilderness. Stir up that love that comes from knowing and loving you, from realizing your love for us, from recognizing your grace and mercy towards us — so that we might run and not grow faint and fly like on the wings of eagles. Help us Lord. Amen.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
Psalms 8:3‭-‬4 NLT
